    River Past Video Slice

River Past Video Slice is an application designed to help you cut video clips of multiple formats, including AVI, ASF, 3GP, MOV, MP4, VOB and WMV. The interface of the program is simplistic and intuitive. Videos can be imported via the file browser only, since the "drag and drop" method is not supported (not on Windows 7, at least). So, you can play the clip and use two buttons to mark the start and end time. But you can also type in their values, take snapshots, view file properties, as well as use the undo and redo functions. Once you hit the "Export" button, you can select the output video format, disable audio, as well as configure video settings (e.g. compressor, resolution, frame rate). In addition, you can apply a grayscale filter, adjust the video quality, modify audio preferences (e.g. sample frequency rate, channel, bit rate), as well as specify the destination folder (same as the original file or other) and the action to take if the file already exists (e.g. prompt to replace). The video splitter needs a pretty high amount of system resources, includes a tutorial with snapshots for beginners and quickly finishes a task without displaying any errors. The image and sound quality is maintained at a very good level. The only downside of River Past Video Slice is its slightly outdated interface. Other than that, we strongly recommend this simple-to-use application to all individuals. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on May 4th, 2012

    Nidesoft DVD Audio Ripper

As the name of this software implies, Nidesoft DVD Audio Ripper allows you to extract the audio stream from DVD videos and save it to MP3, M4A, WMA, WAV, OGG and others. But it can also convert items to AVI, MOV, SWF, RM, MPG and other video formats, as well as prepare clips for iPod, BlackBerry and other devices. The tool is packed in a user-friendly interface. Nidesoft DVD Audio Ripper allows you to import a DVD video into the file list by using either the file browser or tree view ("drag and drop" is unsupported). In the file queue you can read the name, original and trimmed length (if you want to cut clips) of the DVD video. If you do not want to change the standard settings, then you can specify the output directory and file type, in order to proceed with the encoding procedure. Otherwise, you can tinker with the audio and video settings when it comes to the resolution, bit rate, channel mode and volume. But you cannot create output profiles or restore these settings to their initial values. Furthermore, you can preview videos in a built-in media player and take snapshots (BMP), as well as merge and crop clips. Plus, you can trim them by marking the start and end position or time values, make image adjustments (e.g. brightness, contrast) and apply effects (grayscale, negative). Additionally, you can select individual DVD chapters for processing, along with the audio track and subtitle language. The DVD ripping app requires a moderate quantity of system resources, in order to convert a DVD in a short amount of time. It is very responsive and delivers a fair image and sound quality. No errors have occurred throughout our tests and Nidesoft DVD Audio Ripper did not freeze or crash. Too bad there is no help file available. Also, you cannot set the tool to automatically turn off the computer or to open the output directory after conversion. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on November 6th, 2012
